Surfing San Cristobal: Riding the Waves in Galapagos Paradise

Our cherished home base, San Cristobal Island is truly blessed with its prime location, remarkable reefs formed by lava boulders, and the pristine exposure to the majestic energy of the ocean, which welcomes NW, SW, and S swells.

From early November to late March, surfers can revel in the NW swells that grace our shores. These swells, arriving five days after sweeping through the Hawaiian Islands, deliver some of the finest waves, particularly in the range of 305° to 335°. During this time of the year, the gentle trade winds from the S and SE create ideal offshore conditions for the awe-inspiring north-facing breaks.

To experience world-class surf during this season, we invite you to explore the renowned areas of Carola, Cannons, Manglecito lefts and Manglecito rights. With surf ranging from 4 to 8 feet, occasionally accompanied by solid NW swells, there’s no shortage of excitement awaiting you.

From early March to late November, we’re blessed with the SW and S swells. These remarkable waves, making their way to us three days after gracing Tahiti, offer incredible opportunities, particularly between 210° to 240°. While the trade winds can blow quite vigorously from late April to late November, leading to onshore conditions at most south-facing breaks, rest assured that secluded breaks can still offer exceptional conditions. Depending on the swell intensity and the unique bends of certain breaks, offshore conditions can also be found.

To seek epic surf during this period, be sure to explore the renowned areas of Velero, Tongo Reef, Loberia, Outer Reefs, Graveyards, and Pescador. The waves can range from a mesmerizing 3 to a thrilling 10 feet, occasionally punctuated by monstrous SW swells that will leave you in awe.

For your comfort and safety, we provide an 18-foot tender with a cover, including a skilled skipper, who will accompany you to the nearby spots, excluding Loberia Beach, which can be reached by land vehicle.

It’s worth noting that the months of March and April bless us with glassy conditions, adding an extra touch of perfection to your surfing experience.
